Birds of Interior Alaska
Grebes: Red-necked Grebes
Podiceps grisegena

Grebes have lobed toes, not webbed feet, located far back on their body. This foot placement makes them very awkward on land but grebes have a powerful kick for swimming and diving.
Both male and females spend time on the nest taking care of the nest and eggs.

Most grebes build floating nests but this nest was built in shallow water and is now connected to the bottom of the pond. This grebe added material to the nest every time he/she returned to the nest. Since the nest is not floating, it is in danger of flooding by rising water levels.
