Birds In Alaska
Predators: Northern Harrier
Formerly called "Marsh Hawk"
Circus cyaneus

Watch fields and wetlands for a hawk-like predator flying near the ground with its wings
held up in a glide position. Feeds on mice, frogs, voles and other small prey items.

Back view: This female Harrier has typical colorings of brown above, white below with heavy streaking. Note the white patch of feathers on rump. This field mark is easily visible at great distances in both sexes, especially while in flight. Males are pale gray above, mostly white below, with black wing tips and white rump patch.
