Food Group Hopscotch!

Students test their knowledge about food in a game format, played on a food group chart!

1) Lay out and label a food group chart on the floor, including number of recommended daily servings. Prepare food cards for the game.

2) Student draws a card from the pile, telling the partners what it says, where it goes, and the number of recommended daily servings.

Example: "Grapes are in the fruit group; I need 3-4 servings of fruit each day."

3) Student places the card on the food group s/he thinks is correct and confirms with partners.

4) Hop to card, stop to pick it up.

5) Pick up the card. Hop out and return the card face-up to the bottom of the card pile.

This activity is a fun self-test of food group knowledge; an answer key is provided to use as needed. Students can pick up food cards from the "learning center" shelves anytime they finish work early and practice their nutrition skills.

I chose to tape the chart to the carpet so there was no board to mess up or put away. Masking tape is easily removed from the carpet at the end of a unit, and only the cards must be stored away until next time. JG
