Birds In Alaska
Waterfowl: Canvasbacks
Aythya valisineria
Canvasbacks are larger than other ducks with a distinct, triangular-shaped head
The bill is large and angles up smoothly to the crown of the head. The drake has
black tail, white/gray sides and back, brown/black chest, with a Cinnamon-brown
neck and head.

Below: A hen Canvasback guides her brood of nine around the pond.
This hen was very alert! I hid myself in dense brush midway down the pond
and waited for about 30 minutes as she swam slowly closer with her babies.
I lifted the camera about a foot to shoot through my only opening in the brush and
she turned to hurry her young away to safety.

If you are counting, yes, there are only eight ducklings in the photo.
One more popped up beside "Mama" moments after I shot the photo.
